Phonology

Phonology: A division of linguistics, the study of linguistic sound systems — that is, how speech sounds form patterns in a language. Phonology, which includes the inventory of speech sounds and the rules for combining and pronouncing them, is distinguished from phonetics, which refers to the study of speech sounds themselves, including their acoustic (physical) properties, how listeners perceive them (auditory phonetics), and how the vocal tract produces them (articulatory phonetics).
