Arnaud Genon, Fous d'Hervé. Correspondance autour d'Hervé Guibert
Writers: Biography, Letters and Memoirs
As the author of a unique body of work, Hervé Guibert inspired an uncommon fascination during his lifetime. Thirty years after his passing, this fascination remains vibrant, and many still feel a deeply personal connection to him. Arnaud Genon is one of those people. He has dedicated the majority of his research to the writer and his multifaceted output—spanning self-writing, critical essays, photography, and video.
In this book, it is not Hervé Guibert who is given a voice, but those who love him, read him, and admire him, often without ever having met him. Arnaud Genon seeks to gain a deeper understanding of an exceptional body of work, to trace the legacy left by the author, and to discover whether his own obsessive passion is shared by others. Through this work, he shares his rich exchanges with some twenty writers, academics, photographers, journalists, and artists regarding their mutual passion.

The book examines the lasting influence of Hervé Guibert, an author known for his distinctive contributions to self-writing, photography, and critical essays. Rather than presenting the voice of Guibert himself, the volume compiles reflections from admirers, including academics, novelists, and photographers, who engage with his multifaceted output. Through these exchanges, the author investigates the nature of readerly devotion and the continued resonance of an exceptional literary legacy decades after the writer's passing, sharing rich exchanges regarding a mutual passion.
Readers interested in contemporary French literature and the reception of twentieth-century autofiction may find this volume relevant to their pursuits. The text forms part of a broader scholarly engagement with self-referential narratives and the complex relationship between authors and their audiences. It documents how individual readers establish deeply personal connections with a writer's body of work, tracing the ways in which literary fascination endures and manifests across various creative and critical disciplines.
