Publisher's overview:
Jean Vauthier is a poet of the stage. The creator of a fierce body of work, steeped in sweat and beating blood, he unleashes incandescent souls upon the boards. As a theatrical musician, he makes bodies and voices vibrate, always pushing beyond bounds. As he reaches his centenary, Vauthier deserves to be rediscovered. Alongside Beckett, Genet, Ionesco, Schéhadé, and Audiberti, the author of *Capitaine Bada* and *Le Sang* belongs to that generation of New Theatre playwrights who emerged on Parisian stages after the Second World War. Beginning in 1951, his rich theatrical career saw him collaborate with some of the greatest figures of his time, from promising debutants to established masters – Gérard Philipe, Jean-Louis Barrault, Marcel Maréchal, Jorge Lavelli, Claude Régy, and Patrice Chéreau. His work possesses an undeniable originality. Though classed among the avant-garde, yet declaring himself unacquainted with both Beckett and Ionesco; standing apart from the Brechtian vogue; in love with the poetic word at a time of linguistic tragedy; and an innovator little concerned with mere innovation, Vauthier wanted to be nothing other than Vauthier. Overcoming every conceivable obstacle, he succeeded in forging a powerful and peerless oeuvre, clinging to a single thread—what his distant cousin Schéhadé calls "the golden thread of poetry"—yet a poetry that is profoundly dramatic. "To wish to be of one's time is already to be outdated," Ionesco once said. The author of *Capitaine Bada* certainly did not strive to be of his time. If Ionesco is right, Vauthier undoubtedly stands a strong chance, whether for today or for tomorrow.

Jean Vauthier emerged in the post-war era alongside figures such as Samuel Beckett and Eugène Ionesco, contributing to the development of the New Theatre in France. While often associated with the avant-garde movement, Vauthier maintained a distinct artistic independence, prioritizing a poetic approach to drama that diverged from the prevailing linguistic or political trends of his contemporaries. This volume documents his theatrical career and his collaborations with figures such as Gérard Philipe, Jean-Louis Barrault, Marcel Maréchal, Jorge Lavelli, Claude Régy, and Patrice Chéreau.

The book addresses the plays Capitaine Bada, Le Sang, and his adaptations of Shakespearean tragedies. It explores the themes of internal struggle, the musical dimension of his work, and the tension between the creative impulse and the stage. Readers interested in the history of 20th-century French theatre and the evolution of dramatic form may find this examination relevant.
