In the first quarter of 2007, Muriel Mayette, recently appointed as head of the Comédie-Française, staged Bernard-Marie Koltès's Le Retour au désert (Return to the Desert) there. Following the scheduled run of performances, the playwright's estate refused to renew the production's performance rights due to a fundamental disagreement over the casting, specifically regarding the choice of an actor and his ethnic background. Acting much like an investigator, Cyril Desclés revisits in L'Affaire Koltès the public outcry sparked by this decision and the way it was amplified in the media. Beyond recounting and analyzing the facts, and drawing on his insightful expertise in the work and thought of Bernard-Marie Koltès, he engages in a deeper reflection on what theatrical staging entails in general and in particular, the responsibilities inherent in such an act, and the rights and duties of an author's heirs.
Born in 1976, stage director and lighting designer Cyril Desclés leads the L'Embarcadère theater company, where his directing credits include Koltès's La Nuit juste avant les forêts (Night Just Before the Forests) in 2012, as well as Un Rêve d'Alice (Alice's Dream) after Lewis Carroll, and works by Beckett, Mallarmé, and Laforgue.
The author of a doctoral dissertation on the dramatic language of Bernard-Marie Koltès, written under the supervision of Denis Guénoun, he has also penned numerous articles on Koltèsian dramaturgy.

Cyril Desclés analyzes the facts surrounding the disagreement over casting and ethnic background, while drawing on his expertise in the thought of Bernard-Marie Koltès. The text extends into a reflection on theatrical staging, the responsibilities inherent in such acts, and the rights and duties of an author's heirs. Readers interested in contemporary French theatre controversies and the legal frameworks governing dramatic works may find this study relevant.
Bernard-Marie Koltès remains a prominent figure in modern French drama, known for works that continue to provoke significant discussion regarding their interpretation and staging. Debates over the boundaries of directorial vision versus the intentions of a playwright's estate frequently intersect with wider cultural questions in the French theatrical landscape. Cyril Desclés brings his background as a stage director and scholar of dramatic language to the examination of these complex issues.
