Less well-known than his contemporaries Jean de Rotrou, Jean de Mairet, and Pierre Corneille, Balthasar Baro was a renowned man of letters in his day. This first volume brings together three works representing the diversity of his aesthetics: Le Cléosandre (1624), Saint Eustache martyr (1649), and Cariste (1651).
During the seventeenth century, French theatre underwent a major transformation, marked by the development of classical rules and the rise of prominent dramatists. While figures such as Pierre Corneille, Jean de Rotrou, and Jean de Mairet have remained central to the literary canon, Balthasar Baro, who was a renowned man of letters in his day, is less well-known today. This first volume brings together three of his works representing the diversity of his aesthetics: Le Cléosandre (1624), Saint Eustache martyr (1649), and Cariste (1651). Readers interested in seventeenth-century French literature and the history of drama may find this volume relevant.
