Arnaud Maïsetti, Dans la solitude des champs de coton by Bernard-Marie Koltès, or Theatre as Close Combat
Theatre and Performance
As the keystone of a brief, intense, and prematurely cut-short oeuvre, playwright Bernard-Marie Koltès's (1948-1989) In the Solitude of Cotton Fields might be seen as a quintessential text—distilled to its essence, encapsulating the author's entire poetics, his vision of theatre, the world, and human relationships. The play, a pure dialogue, seems to encompass the whole of theatre through a scene wrenched from life itself, its raw savagery framed within the virtuoso language of exchange: a drug deal at night in some modern city. Yet, what is the Dealer offering to the Client, who refuses it? A play of riddles that underlies the stakes of all human relations, it remains the most frequently performed and discussed work of a major 20th-century author.
Arnaud Maïsetti is a Senior Lecturer in Performing Arts at Aix-Marseille University. He is the author of the biographical essay Bernard-Marie Koltès (2018, Minuit). A theatre critic for the collective L’Insensé and dramaturg for the Compagnie D’un Pays Lointain, he is also a writer in his own right.
Bernard-Marie Koltès remains a prominent figure in twentieth-century drama, known for works that examine the complexities of human interaction through intense dialogue. In the Solitude of Cotton Fields is recognized as a central text within his career, frequently performed and discussed. Arnaud Maïsetti, a Senior Lecturer in Performing Arts and theatre critic, has previously engaged with the author's biography and artistic output. Readers interested in contemporary French drama and the critical reception of modern theatrical repertoires may find this volume relevant to their pursuits.
