Publisher's overview:

A myth surrounds the life and work of Bernard-Marie Koltès: an unconventional life, a premature death, a life dedicated almost exclusively to playwriting, and a fruitful collaboration with Patrice Chéreau.

Had his work not consisted of six masterly plays, this myth would never have been born. Yet, because legend surrounds him—both enhancing and obscuring his legacy—it felt necessary to offer a clear, in-depth reading and interpretation of one of the playwright's most fascinating works, "In the Solitude of Cotton Fields", while also addressing broader aesthetic and existential questions.

Aline Mura-Brunel lives in Paris. A university professor, she published a book entitled Eloge du lecteur d'aujourd'hui with Lavoir Saint-Martin in 2011. Previously, she published two critical essays—one on Balzac, Béatrix ou la logique des contraires (Champion, 1997), and another on the contemporary novel, Silences du roman. Balzac et le romanesque contemporain (Rodopi, 2004)—along with numerous articles. She has also edited several collaborative volumes on contemporary writers.

Bernard-Marie Koltès remains one of the most significant voices in late twentieth-century French drama. His tragic, early death in 1989 and his intense collaboration with the director Patrice Chéreau helped cement a legendary status that sometimes overshadows the rigorous intellectual depth of his writing. By focusing on In the Solitude of Cotton Fields, Aline Mura-Brunel unpacks the complex dialogue between the Dealer and the Client. This study moves beyond the biographical myth to explore how Koltès uses theatrical space and language to address profound existential questions, desire, and the nature of human exchange.

This volume is an essential resource for students, researchers, and theatre practitioners seeking a deeper understanding of contemporary French playwriting. Aline Mura-Brunel, a university professor with extensive expertise in both nineteenth-century literature and contemporary narrative forms, brings a sharp analytical perspective to Koltès's dramatic syntax. Readers interested in how modern drama grapples with isolation, commerce, and the limits of communication will find this book highly valuable. It successfully bridges the gap between close textual analysis and broader aesthetic inquiry, offering fresh insights into a masterpiece of modern theatre.
