OVERVIEW

In the Negev Desert, ornithologist Amotz Zahavi studies Arabian babblers, social birds that gather at dusk or dawn to dance. Why do they do it? And what does it mean when they offer each other gifts? Can we assume, as Zahavi suggests, that they are motivated by matters of prestige? For philosopher Vinciane Despret, who joined the research team, this presented an extraordinary opportunity to understand not only how animals are observed, but also how researchers construct theories to account for their behavior.

Should animals be studied by subjecting them to artificial experimental setups, or by following them in the field and gathering every possible clue? Are evolutionary theories dependent on the context of observation, the environment, or the imperative to "do science"?

These are the very questions that allow the author to paint a portrait of ethology and what it teaches us about a world we do not inhabit alone—one we must learn to share better. Might a world where birds dance and exchange gifts, and where researchers grow inventive through observing them, help us challenge the rigid divide between humans and non-humans?

Vinciane Despret is a philosopher and researcher in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Liège. She is the author of several authoritative books on animal studies, notably Bêtes et hommes (Gallimard, 2007) and Penser comme un rat (Quae, 2009). She has also co-authored, with Isabelle Stengers, Les Faiseuses d’histoires. Que font les femmes à la pensée? (La Découverte, 2011) and What Would Animals Say If We Asked the Right Questions? (Les Empêcheurs de penser en rond/La Découverte, 2012, 2014).

Ethology as a scientific discipline investigates animal behavior through varied methodologies, ranging from controlled laboratory experiments to immersive field observations. Within the philosophy of science, scholars frequently examine how observational practices, researcher perspectives, and environmental contexts shape the formulation of biological theories.

Readers interested in the philosophy of science, human-animal relations, and the history of behavioral biology may find this work relevant.
