How are we to conceptualize the experience of reading texts, as well as audio files, abstract paintings, people, or situations? What kind of communication and conception of the social does it entail?

Etymologically, to read means to gather plants to make remedies. Reading pertains to a social therapeutics that recent or classical theories of care can help us understand. Reading is not simply the decoding of signs; it must be integrated into a history of media and a theory of justice. If justice is not merely the establishment of rights between individuals, but above all attentive ways of connecting human beings and caring for them, then the experience of reading, along with the bonds of friendship it may foster, becomes a model for everyday life. The concept of care has gained significant traction in contemporary humanities, shifting the focus from abstract ethical principles to the concrete, relational practices that sustain social bonds. Lire avec soin. Amitié, justice, médias draws on the etymological connection between reading and the gathering of remedies to situate the act of interpretation within a history of media and social therapeutics. The work suggests that reading is not simply the decoding of signs, but must be integrated into a theory of justice and a politics of transmission that shapes the capacity for judgment.

The text engages with the intersection of political philosophy and media studies, examining how the transmission of knowledge and the cultivation of friendship function as alternatives to rights-based models of justice. By revisiting the works of thinkers such as Saint-Évremond and Spinoza, the volume addresses the precarious nature of media and the evolution of critical thinking. Readers interested in the history of ideas and the ethics of interpretation may find this exploration of the reader-friend relationship and the politics of transmission relevant to their own inquiries.
