A student, a teacher, an encounter, an infinity of discussions. Charlotte Casiraghi and Robert Maggiori conceived the idea of committing to writing the seeds of their dialogues, which often wandered in all directions yet always returned to the question of sensibility—what affects us, the boundaries or lack thereof between emotions, their logic, and sometimes their confusion. It then became clear to them that all our states of mind form an interconnected archipelago of islets, linked by the magnetic current of desire, which weaves invisible chains among them. It is this archipelago that they set out to map.
The book, which reads like a short treatise on the passions, comprises some forty "entries" (Love, Cruelty, Patience, Modesty, Disgust, Adoration, Admiration, Arrogance, Pity, Fraternity, Gentleness, Boredom, Sadness, Jealousy, etc.), grounded in philosophical knowledge, accompanied by carefully curated reading guides, and written in a clear and accessible style.
Charlotte Casiraghi holds a degree in philosophy and serves as president of the Monaco Philosophical Encounters (Rencontres philosophiques de Monaco).
Robert Maggiori is a philosopher and literary critic for Libération.
The philosophical dialogue has long served as a fundamental medium for examining human ethics, interiority, and the nature of emotion. By structuring their reflections around discrete thematic entries, authors and thinkers have often sought to categorize and understand the varied promptings of the soul. This approach connects personal reflection with established philosophical inquiry, examining how individual sentiments relate to broader questions of human conduct and sensibility. Readers interested in contemporary approaches to ethics and the philosophy of emotions may find this work relevant to their pursuits.
The volume comprises approximately forty distinct entries, ranging from love and cruelty to patience, modesty, and boredom. Grounded in philosophical knowledge and supplemented by curated reading guides, the text approaches these complex experiences through a clear and accessible style. Rather than offering a rigid theoretical system, the work presents an interconnected map of human passions, highlighting the underlying currents of desire and sensibility that shape our inner reflections.
