What is it that makes something happen in front of a work of art — or conversely, keeps anything from happening at all?

At the crossroads of philosophy and art history, this book traces our relationship with contemporary art, and with works of art in general.

And first, an enigma: why do we so often feel, when visiting contemporary art exhibitions, that the works are inaccessible? As if they were not there to be appreciated or encountered. How can we explain these missed encounters, other than by the visitor's lack of cultural background or the decadence of contemporary art? This communication failure is elucidated here through a genealogy of the constraints that weigh jointly on contemporary creation and its reception.

Conversely, how are we to understand what takes place when something *does* happen—when we are seized by a book, devoured alive by a painting, unfolded by a melody—simultaneously struck down and reconstructed by the encounter with a work of art?

Baptiste Morizot and Estelle Zhong Mengual investigate the power of art to transform us and establish itself as a privileged space for individuating encounters: those that shape who we are.

A writer and researcher in philosophy, Baptiste Morizot is a senior lecturer at Aix-Marseille University. He is the author of Les Diplomates (Wildproject, 2016) and Sur la piste animale (Actes Sud, 2018).

An alumna of the École Normale Supérieure and Ph.D. in art history from Sciences Po Paris, Estelle Zhong Mengual is the author of L’Art en commun (Presses du Réel, 2018).

"Art That Escapes Us", by Géraldine Sfez, April 17, 2019.

Is contemporary art inaccessible, to the point of evading any "encounter" with the spectator? This is the thesis defended by Baptiste Morizot and Estelle Zhong Mengual, who examine the conditions necessary for a reconciliation between works of art and their public.

At the intersection of philosophy and art history, questions concerning the reception of contemporary creation often focus on the perceived inaccessibility of works and the communication failures experienced by visitors. Addressing these dynamics involves examining the constraints that shape both artistic production and spectator experience, moving beyond common assumptions regarding cultural background or cultural decline.

The transformative capacity of aesthetic experience forms a central theme in discussions of how literature, painting, and music can profoundly affect the individual. By framing artistic engagement as a privileged space for encounters that shape personal identity, this study investigates the ways works of art exert a lasting influence upon us. Readers interested in contemporary aesthetics, philosophy, and the relationship between audiences and modern art may find it relevant. The authors bring backgrounds in philosophy and art history to this collaborative inquiry into the enigmas of artistic reception.
