Publisher's Description:
Why is it so often said that the room is essential to Proust's creative process? How did the room of creation—inseparable from that of the writer himself—develop to culminate in the birth of his novel? By situating it within the social and architectural context of his time, and by tracing and illuminating the development of his creative process through an analysis of the salon and its furnishings (which stand in direct opposition to it), this study seeks to highlight the decisive role the room plays in Proust's path to creation. Focusing on the room and the creative act unique to Proust, this volume addresses the stages of their development and the complexity of their themes.
Holding a PhD in Literature from Kyoto University, Ayano Hiramitsu is a lecturer at Kobe University and has published several works on rooms, furniture, and salons in Proust's oeuvre.

Ayano Hiramitsu examines how physical spaces shaped the genesis of À la recherche du temps perdu, contrasting the intimate enclosure of the writer's room with the public sphere of the fin-de-siècle salon. By analyzing domestic architecture, interior furnishings, and contemporary social spaces, the study illuminates the material conditions that fostered modernist introspection and narrative creation. The volume contextualizes Proust's work within the broader aesthetic preoccupations of the Third Republic, offering a nuanced perspective on the relationship between domestic geography and literary inspiration.
This scholarly contribution will appeal to specialists of Marcel Proust, researchers in French literature, and readers interested in the spatial dynamics of modernist writing. It provides valuable critical tools for understanding how architectural motifs function symbolically and structurally across Proust's oeuvre. Scholars of nineteenth- and twentieth-century French culture will find it a compelling exploration of the intersection between biography, interior design, and the creative genesis of a masterwork.
