This work studies an extensive corpus of clefs published between the beginning of the reign of Louis XIV and the Revolution, which were intended to identify historical figures hidden under the cloak of fiction. It considers how literary scholarship might benefit from these largely forgotten and often denigrated accessories.
During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, French literature frequently employed allegory and thinly veiled satire, giving rise to the popular genre of the roman à clef. To help contemporary readers navigate these texts, publishers often circulated separate keys (clefs) that explicitly linked fictional characters to real-world court figures and political actors. Anna Arzoumanov's study contextualizes these interpretive guides, moving beyond their reputation as mere gossip sheets to examine them as serious instruments of literary reception and political commentary during the Ancien Régime.
This book addresses crucial questions about how historical readers engaged with fiction and how authorship and censorship operated under the monarchy. By analyzing these interpretive protocols, Arzoumanov offers literary historians and scholars of the Enlightenment and classical eras a new framework for understanding the relationship between history and narrative. It is an essential resource for researchers interested in the history of reading, book history, and the sociopolitical dimensions of early modern French literature.
