OVERVIEW

For several decades, the poetry and prose of P.J. Jouve have continuously sparked the interest of scholars and researchers drawn to a body of work imbued with pain and spirituality, which has yet to reveal all of its secrets. This study represents a modest attempt to examine the novels Hécate and Paulina 1880 through the lens of the duality that shapes characters based on mythological figures.

Yosr REZGUI-GUETAT holds a PhD in Literature. She teaches French literature and civilization at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Sousse (University of Sousse, Tunisia). Having authored a dissertation on Jouve (2017), she has also published articles on the same author, as well as on the theme of madness in the works of Nerval and Van Gogh.

Pierre Jean Jouve occupies a distinctive place in twentieth-century French literature, known for a body of work that navigates the complex intersections of psychoanalysis, mysticism, and the aesthetic of the novel. His writing often explores the tension between the conscious self and the darker, subterranean impulses of the human psyche. By grounding his narratives in mythological archetypes, Jouve invites a deeper investigation into the fractured nature of identity. This study examines the novels Hécate and Paulina 1880 through the lens of the duality that shapes characters based on mythological figures.

The novels Hécate and Paulina 1880 are frequently cited as central to understanding Jouve's narrative form. Set against historical backdrops, these works utilize the framework of myth to articulate spiritual and emotional struggles. By analyzing the duality present in these texts, the research examines the ways in which Jouve constructs his literary universe through the lens of mythological resonance. Readers interested in the evolution of the French psychological novel or the intersection of myth and modern prose may find this scholarly examination relevant to their inquiries.
