OVERVIEW

"The left," "the right"—they no longer exist, so they say. Supposedly, there are only innovations on the march and reforms rushed through at breakneck speed. But in what direction? According to what guiding principles?
This concise book aims to help us reorient ourselves from an angle rarely explored in our political debates: that of literary sensibility. Against the media absurdity of soundbites, it sets the poetic and political virtues of new words. Around twenty unusual terms are proposed to represent the tensions underlying our contemporary problems. Structured around polarities, this playful toolkit of new -isms reinterprets and reconfigures the grand left-right divide without abolishing it.

Rather than founding a new party, the goal is to identify new currents, inseparable from their counter-currents. Instead of choosing a side, literature helps us grasp the tensions that run through all of us. Rather than inciting warfare, it invites us to smile—and to smile at ourselves—as our problems are far too serious to be left to solemnity or partisan spirit.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Yves Citton is a professor of literature and media at Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint-Denis University and co-director of the journal Multitudes.

The study of political discourse through the prism of aesthetics and linguistics has long been a feature of French intellectual life, often drawing on the tradition of critical theory to examine how language shapes our perception of power. This work explores the intersection of literary sensibility and political debate, using a vocabulary of around twenty unusual terms to map social complexities. It addresses the limitations of binary political labels by suggesting that the tensions inherent in contemporary problems can be engaged through a poetic approach to language rather than traditional partisan rhetoric.

This approach reflects an interest in how literature can provide a framework for navigating internal and societal contradictions, moving beyond the constraints of media soundbites. The text organizes concepts around polarities to identify currents and counter-currents, emphasizing a reflective rather than combative stance. Readers interested in the relationship between creative expression and political philosophy may find it relevant to consider how these proposed terms interact with established ideological categories.
