Alongside the traditional theoretical or historical question: "What is literature?", a more urgent critical and political question arises today: "What can literature do?" What value do contemporary society and culture assign to literature? What is its utility? What is its role? "My confidence in the future of literature," declared Italo Calvino, "rests on the certainty that there are things that only literature can give us." Will this credo still be ours?

Born in 1950, Antoine Compagnon has taught at the Sorbonne and Columbia University in New York. Since 2006, he has been a professor holding the chair of Modern and Contemporary French Literature: History, Criticism, Theory at the Collège de France. He is notably the author of La Troisième République des lettres (1983), Les Cinq Paradoxes de la modernité (1990), and Les Antimodernes, de Joseph de Maistre à Roland Barthes (2005).

The question of the value and function of literature has long occupied critics, philosophers, and historians of culture. While traditional academic inquiry often focuses on historical contextualization or formal analysis, contemporary debates frequently interrogate the practical or civic role of artistic expression. This broader reflection engages with a long tradition of thought regarding the relationship between aesthetic experience, ethics, and society, examining how imaginative writing contributes to collective understanding and individual formation within modern culture.

Readers interested in modern literary criticism, the sociology of literature, and French intellectual history may find this publication relevant. Antoine Compagnon addresses the utility and role of literature alongside the question of what literature can do in contemporary society. The volume reflects ongoing scholarly discussions concerning the place of the humanities and the arts in the contemporary world, drawing on the author's extensive background in modern and contemporary French literature, history, criticism, and theory.
