COMPARATISM, A 3D UNIVERSE?
Antonio DOMÍNGUEZ LEIVA, Sébastien HUBIER, and Frédérique TOUDOIRE-SURLAPIERRE
"Advocating for a new 3D comparatism is not about yielding to the latest trendy technological feat; it is about demanding greater depth of vision and more relief for the object under contemplation. The ambition of this book is twofold and is set within the immediate contemporary historical context.
On the one hand, by placing the future of Comparative Literature within the historical continuity of a reflection on culture and the modalities of its interpretation; on the other hand, by showing that the notion of literature (and the artistic forms of expression that accompany it) is inseparable from a reflection on the tools for understanding a contemporary culture—one that is undoubtedly in crisis, yet ever-shifting."
Antonio Domínguez Leiva is a professor at UQAM (Montreal) and the author of works on the cultural history of cruelty and eroticism.
Sébastien Hubier teaches at the University of Reims and at the transatlantic campus of the Paris Institute of Political Studies. He is the author of works on the cultural representations of intimacy, particularly within the erotic field.
Frédérique Toudoire-Surlapierre is a professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Haute-Alsace. She has published several books dedicated to criticism, Nordic literatures, theater, and the relationship between literature and the arts.
Rooted in contemporary cultural reflection, this collaborative volume proposes an expanded vision of comparative literature and artistic expression. By advocating for a three-dimensional approach, the authors seek to provide greater interpretive depth for analyzing cultural objects and texts. The work situates itself within the ongoing evolution of literary studies, addressing how humanistic inquiry must adapt to better understand our rapidly shifting contemporary culture and its myriad forms of creative production.
This accessible yet rigorous study will particularly interest researchers, students, and scholars of comparative literature, cultural studies, and modern aesthetics. It offers valuable perspectives on the methodological tools required to navigate complex artistic landscapes and interpret literary works alongside other cultural artifacts. By bridging traditional literary history with contemporary interpretive challenges, the book serves as a thoughtful guide for anyone engaged in the broader study of the humanities today.
