OVERVIEW

A prominent figure in 19th-century French political and intellectual life, Pierre Paul Royer-Collard has largely slipped into obscurity. Yet his remarkable career hardly warrants such a fate: Girondin activist, informant for the future Louis XVIII during the Consulate, professor of philosophy at the Sorbonne, deputy for the Marne department, and member of the Académie française. Drawing on a largely unexplored corpus of sources, this book offers the first intellectual biography of Pierre Paul Royer-Collard.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Corinne Doria holds a PhD in Contemporary History from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the University of Milan. She teaches at the University of Paris 1, Sciences Po Paris, and the University of Turin. She has published a critical edition of Pierre Paul Royer-Collard’s philosophical texts (Textes philosophiques et psychologiques, Paris, L’Harmattan, 2013) and edited numerous volumes on the political and intellectual history of 19th-century France and Europe.

Pierre Paul Royer-Collard navigated a turbulent era that bridged the late eighteenth-century revolutionary upheavals and the political transformations of nineteenth-century France. This period was marked by deep ideological shifts concerning constitutional monarchy, representative government, and the legacy of the Enlightenment. Figures in this intellectual landscape often engaged with the complex interplay between public authority and philosophical inquiry, moving fluidly between academic institutions, such as the Sorbonne, and parliamentary assemblies. Corinne Doria examines this milieu by tracing Royer-Collard's trajectory from a Girondin activist and royalist informant to a prominent academic and deputy, drawing upon a largely unexplored corpus of sources to reconstruct the multifaceted career of a man who was also a member of the Académie française. Readers interested in nineteenth-century French political history, the history of philosophy, and the formation of liberal doctrine may find this intellectual biography a relevant contribution to the field.
