Historia magistra vitæ: the famous Ciceronian formula, revived by Italian humanism, remained a point of reference well into the 18th century. In history promoted as the "mistress of life," the classical age sought—much like pagan antiquity—examples to emulate. It also sought religious instruction, lessons in political realism, and insight into human nature.

The lessons expected of history thus took on diverse and even antagonistic forms, yet they were consistently fraught with significance, revealing the underlying currents of European thought. This volume explores, for the first time, these varied conceptions of history, drawing primarily upon the numerous theoretical texts dedicated to the subject, while also engaging with the actual Histories, memoirs, and fictional works of the period.

During the classical age, the concept of history as a guide for human conduct occupied a central place in European letters. Rooted in humanist traditions and classical antiquity, historical writing was frequently expected to furnish exemplary figures for emulation, lessons in political prudence, and reflections on human nature. These varied expectations often pulled in different directions, reflecting broader tensions within early modern thought regarding the function of historical narrative. Theoretical treatises, memoirs, and narrative prose alike engaged with these questions, positioning the past as a vital arena for moral and political instruction well into the eighteenth century.

Béatrice Guion examines these diverse conceptions of history, drawing primarily upon theoretical texts alongside actual Histories, memoirs, and fictional works of the period. Readers interested in the history of ideas, early modern historiography, and the intellectual culture of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Europe may find this volume relevant.
