On a summer evening in 1933, in Paris, an ordinary family was plunged into tragedy: 18-year-old Violette Nozière poisoned her parents, entering the annals of major criminal cases with her black fur collar and tilted beret. Upon confessing, the young girl accused her father of incestuous relations. Parricide, incest, poison: this sensational news story, shaped by the media of the time, had all the makings of a modern tragedy.

The investigation kept the public in suspense, as this extraordinary crime led them through working-class homes, onto the capital's sidewalks, among venomous women and unfit parents, corrupt students, "métèques", and "rotten" elites. The case called into question the relationships between fathers and daughters, parents and children, men and women. Violette became the "flower of evil," a dark icon of female emancipation and generational conflict in a France in crisis.
She was sentenced to death before being pardoned and ultimately rehabilitated.

Exploring the representations, passions, and questions raised by the crime, and tracing the exceptional journey of a woman, this book offers an entirely fresh reading of a famous crime. Above all, it proposes a way of writing history through a legal case. As a form of total history consisting of thoroughly studying a micro-subject and unfolding it in all its dimensions to read a society, microhistory here reveals the social imaginary and its dynamics with unprecedented efficacy.

An article about this book can be read on en-attendant-nadeau.fr:

This work belongs to the tradition of microhistory, a historical approach that examines a singular, localized event to illuminate broader societal structures, cultural anxieties, and legal practices. By focusing intensely on the 1933 parricide case involving an eighteen-year-old Paris resident, the author constructs a form of total history. This methodology allows researchers to unpack the complex layers of an era defined by economic instability, shifting gender roles, and intense moral scrutiny, transforming a sensational legal dossier into a rich archive of the interwar social imaginary.

Scholars of modern French history, cultural studies, and legal history will find this volume particularly valuable for understanding how media representations shape public perception and criminal justice. The book addresses fundamental questions regarding generational conflict, domestic abuse, and the societal policing of female autonomy during the Third Republic. It serves as an essential resource for readers seeking to understand how high-profile crimes function as mirrors of political tension and moral panic in a society on the brink of profound transformation.
