Publisher's overview:

Imported from the Anglo-Saxon world, postcolonial studies are now firmly established in French academia. Following their initial development in Anglo-American studies, they have expanded into the fields of Francophone and comparative literature. This volume offers a cross-cutting study of the postcolonial novel across both Anglophone and Francophone traditions, spanning diverse geographical areas such as Africa, the Caribbean, and India. Can we speak of the emergence of a "novel of the South" or a tropicalization of the novel driven by magical or marvelous realism? The ten essays in this volume aim to outline the poetics developed by European-language postcolonial novels rooted in a multilingual and multicultural space, stemming from comparable historical processes regardless of linguistic and institutional differences (primarily the Commonwealth and the Francophonie). To this end, the analysis examines the relationship between the novel as an aesthetic object and ethics, politics, and history.

Postcolonial studies emerged as a distinct academic field to address the cultural and literary legacies of colonial history, particularly within the Commonwealth and the Francophonie. By focusing on works written in European languages, this area of inquiry explores how writers navigate complex multilingual and multicultural environments. The study of these texts often involves identifying shared historical processes that shape narrative forms, such as the influence of magical or marvelous realism. Readers interested in the comparative development of literature from Africa, the Caribbean, and India may find this collection of essays relevant to their research.
