ABOUT THE BOOK:

Although their names are familiar to the general public, Europe's greatest literary creators are, in reality, very poorly known. Intimidated or put off by the difficulty, most readers settle for bland and abridged adaptations. Rather than reading The Iliad, people watch Troy... This book aims to reconcile the reader – all readers – with the great classics of European literature by removing the barriers that block access to them. Each chapter is devoted to a "genius": Homer, Dante, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Goethe, Hugo, and Joyce. Their profiles are followed by an introduction to their major works: The Iliad and The Odyssey, The Divine Comedy, Don Quixote, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, etc., Werther and Faust, Les Contemplations, La Légende des siècles, Les Misérables, and Ulysses.

Featuring numerous illustrations and abundant citations in their original languages accompanied by translations, this book offers a fascinating guided tour of Europe's major literary landmarks. Alongside its primary goal of reconciling readers with the canonical texts of our culture, it has another objective: to provide European citizens, too often confined within their national identities, with a foundation of shared values that enables them to feel truly European.

THE AUTHOR

Vincent Laisney, agrégé de lettres modernes and PhD in Literature (Sorbonne Nouvelle), is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Paris-Ouest-Nanterre-La Défense. A specialist in French romanticism and 19th-century literary circles, he has published three books: L’Arsenal romantique. Le salon de Charles Nodier (1824-1834), Honoré Champion, 2002; Le Miroir et le chemin (ed.), Presses de la Sorbonne Nouvelle, 2006; L’Âge des cénacles (in collaboration with A. Glinoer), Fayard, 2013.

The text dedicated to each genius is available separately in digital format.
A dedicated ePub is thus provided for Homer, Dante, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Goethe, Hugo, and Joyce.

European literary heritage encompasses centuries of foundational texts that continue to shape the cultural imagination, from ancient epic poetry to modernist prose. Works by figures such as Homer, Dante, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Goethe, Hugo, and Joyce occupy a central place in this tradition, yet modern readers often encounter obstacles when approaching them directly. Vincent Laisney addresses this challenge by examining the profiles of these seven major creators alongside introductions to their principal works, including The Iliad, The Divine Comedy, and Ulysses. The volume incorporates illustrations and multilingual citations with translations to guide readers through these major literary landmarks.

Beyond fostering a renewed appreciation for canonical literature, the book touches upon the role of shared cultural references in shaping European identity beyond national borders. By presenting these classic texts in an accessible format, the study seeks to remove the barriers that often intimidate the general public. Readers interested in comparative literature and the reception of European classics may find this work relevant to their pursuits.
