Publisher's Description:

On various relationships between poetry, prose, and painting in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Through exemplary cases, La Poésie hors du cadre explores how the literary imagination develops through contact with pictorial, poetic, or even foreign imagery, breaking free from the traditional boundaries assigned to genres and forms to discover a renewed creative breath. Overwhelmed by prosaic elements in the mid-19th century, poetry expanded beyond its conventional territory, embedding modernity within a critical melancholy that fostered fruitful artistic struggles. This disenchantment triggered a revival in the early 20th century, when exceptional affinities between poets and artists provided a major opportunity to restore the poem's power through a revitalized Romanticism.

Corinne Bayle is a professor of French literature at the École normale supérieure de Lyon.

The intersections between literature and the visual arts have long occupied a central place in French aesthetic inquiry, particularly during the transition from nineteenth-century romanticism to the modernist movements of the twentieth century. Writers frequently turned to painting and external imagery to challenge conventional generic boundaries, seeking alternative modes of expression when traditional verse forms seemed inadequate to capture modern experience. This porous relationship between mediums encouraged poets to experiment with prose poetry and visual structures, engaging directly with the artistic currents of their eras while redefining the formal limits of the literary text.
