Maurice Blanchot, Jean Starobinski, Yves Bonnefoy, Hubert Damisch, Michel Deguy, Gérard Genette, Daniel Oster, Louis Marin, Jean-Louis Leutrat, and Georges Didi-Huberman are the "subjects" of this book. The principle underlying their gathering stems from the central question posed to them: what legacy of thought on art, painting, and images does each leave behind? My task in each case was first to reconstruct each author's framework of problems through the lens of this very question.

These authors truly embody "figures of thought" inasmuch as each has demonstrated a commitment, through their publications, to advancing the reflections we strive to build through our dialogue with others. Yet, precisely because thought is articulated through language, is it not bound to reflect upon its own operation? To whatever extent this is possible, it can only happen through long detours—not face-to-face, but via figures.

Thus, "figures of thought" are also, and primarily, those traced by thought itself, hovering between meditation and mediation, when confronting art, painting, and images.

The volume gathers ten figures whose work has shaped reflection on art, painting, and visual representation, including Maurice Blanchot, Jean Starobinski, Yves Bonnefoy, and Georges Didi-Huberman. The author examines the intellectual frameworks of these writers by investigating the specific legacy each leaves behind regarding art, painting, and images. These authors embody figures of thought inasmuch as each has demonstrated a commitment to advancing the reflections we strive to build through our dialogue with others.

A central question of the study concerns the legacy of thought on art, painting, and images that each author leaves behind. The author explores how thought is articulated through language and must reflect upon its own operation through long detours rather than face-to-face, via figures. Readers interested in French criticism, aesthetic theory, and the intersections between literature and visual studies may find this work relevant to their interests.
