  2. Introduction (10 minutes): Briefly introduce Jhumpa Lahiri and the short story collection "Interpreter of Maladies." Discuss the historical context of Indian immigration to the United States.

Assign each group a short excerpt from the beginning of the story that focuses on the setting and characters (e.g., description of the car ride, introduction of the Das family). Have each group identify key details about the characters and setting. Facilitate a class discussion to share findings and build a picture of the story's world.

  3. Literary Devices (20 minutes): Have students identify and analyze specific literary devices used by Lahiri. Possible examples include symbolism (objects, actions, names), characterization (direct and indirect), and point of view (how the story is narrated). Students can work in pairs to find examples in the text and discuss their significance.
  4. Close Reading Activity (20 minutes): Select a specific scene or passage rich in symbolism or character development. Have students closely read the passage, annotate it, and then discuss the author's craft and its contribution to the story's meaning.
