Stock response

The Bedford Glossary of Critical and Literary Terms - Ross Murfin 2018

Stock response

Stock response: An uncritical, automatic, “knee-jerk” response to a given situation from the audience or reader; a response according to convention rather than true feeling or appropriate judgment.

EXAMPLES: The death of a child typically elicits sadness; soldiers going into battle carrying the flag evoke a feeling of patriotism.
