Philology

Philology: Broadly defined, the study of language and literature. More narrowly defined, the study of language, particularly the historical and comparative development of languages. In the twentieth century, the term linguistics eclipsed philology in denoting the scientific study of language, focusing on spoken rather than written language and on how language functions as a system.
