XI MURONG, (1943— ). Poet, essayist, and painter. A descendent of Mongolian nobility, Xi was born in Sichuan. She left China for Hong Kong in 1949 and moved to Taiwan in 1955. Popular among young readers in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the mainland, Xi’s love poems, including those collected in Qi li xiang (Seven-li scent) and Wuyuan de qingchun (Unregrettable Youth), are sentimental and nostalgic in their refined expressions of the fragile and tumultuous emotions of adolescence. Xi has additionally published several collections of essays, including Xinling de tansuo (Soul-Searching). See also WOMEN.
