KONG JIESHENG (1952— ). Fiction and prose writer. Born and raised in Guangzhou, Kong Jiesheng was sent to work for four years in rural Guangdong, an experience that became the source of his writing. In the late 1970s, Kong won several awards for his stories before he published his best-known work, “Nanfang de an” (The Shores of the South), in 1982. The story portrays several educated youths learning life’s important lessons from their experiences during and after the turbulent years of the Cultural Revolution. Two years later, another novella, “Da linmang” (The Great Forest), about the tragic fate of five educated youths on the state farms of Hainan Island, also garnered national notice.
